About Iowa's Best Contractors

Iowa's Best Contractors lists every construction contractor registered with the State of Iowa — all 18,879 of them, across 99 counties and 32 trades. Not a curated selection. Not the ones who paid. All of them.

Where the data comes from

Every listing is built from the Active Iowa Construction Contractor Registrations, published by the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing under Iowa Code ch. 91C. Iowa law requires anyone earning $2,000 or more per year from construction work in Iowa to register with the State.

The State itself lists four purposes for keeping this registry. The fourth is “to make information about contractors available to the general public.” That is exactly what this site does.

Data last updated 2026-07-13. You can always verify any registration directly with the State.

What registration means — and what it doesn't

This is the part most directories get wrong, so we want to be precise about it.

Iowa contractor registration is a compliance credential, not a competenceone. It confirms a business is square with unemployment insurance and workers' compensation law, and it lets the State collect money owed by out-of-state contractors. Registration costs $50.

The State does not test skills, verify experience, check references, or assess financial responsibility. So a registration number means a contractor is legally allowed to operate — it does not mean they are any good.

That is why you will never see us describe an individual contractor as licensed, verified, vetted, screened, or best. They are registered. We say the true thing, and we let you do the judging.

Some trades hold real licenses too

Plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical contractors are separately licensed by the Iowa Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board, and electricians by the Iowa Electrical Examining Board. Those are genuine licenses with testing behind them. They are separate registries, and they are not yet reflected here.

About our name — and how we rank contractors

“Iowa’s Best Contractors” is our name, not a rating. We don’t rank, score, or recommend anyone — we list every contractor registered with the State of Iowa, alphabetically, and let you judge.

So when we say Iowa's Best Contractors, we mean the directory is the best one — because it's complete. Every contractor the State has registered is here, including the ones who'd rather not be. That's the opposite of what the big sites do, where you only see whoever paid.

We do notmean that any individual contractor listed here is “the best.” We have no way to know that, and neither does the State — see above. Listings are alphabetical. Nobody pays for position, and no algorithm decides who you see first. If that ever changes, any paid placement will be labelled clearly, on the page where it appears.

Who owns this site

Iowa's Best Contractors is owned and operated by BizRnR. We may market BizRnR products and services to contractors who claim a profile. We think you should know that up front rather than find it out later.
